Overview
HSR.health's Kidney Care Desert Analysis increases awareness of an often-overlooked healthcare access issue: that many Americans across the country lack basic access to kidney care resources. We aim to identify those communities and publicize how geography can contribute to public health concerns. Our Kidney Care Desert Analysis identifies multiple locations in the United States where kidney care resources are severely deficient and may constitute a significant barrier to care for millions of Americans.
Kidney Care Desert Story Map
Dialysis is the process in which artificial means are used to replace the blood filtering function of the kidneys. There are two main types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. These centers are needed when a person's kidneys cease functioning properly. This process presents itself primarily as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), where the kidneys are damaged and will no longer filter effectively, and End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), where the kidneys cease functioning altogether.
